I’m back with another book review, and this time I’m reading and reviewing “My Next Life as a Villainess Side Story: Girls Patch!” Unlike the main “My Next Life As A Villainess” series, “Girls Patch” is a collection of side stories that fit neatly into any time during the main story without giving away major spoilers. Since the stories don’t give away any major spoilers, both new and seasoned fans can read this anthology with no worries.
As this is an anthology of one-shots/side stories, I won’t be reviewing this like I typically would for books, but instead give my overall thoughts on the collection.
All of the stories are fairly entertaining. The only male character that appears in the anthology is Keith, Catarina’s brother, but it’s extremely minor since the anthology focuses on Catarina and her female love interests (Mary, Sophia, and Maria). Most of the stories have a heavier focus on Mary and Catarina in particular, which will appease fans of that pairing. Sophia has a good few stories focusing on her relationship with Catarina, too. One of my favorite stories in the anthology, “The Green Flash,” focuses on Mary and Catarina. This particular story also involves the council of multiple Catarinas existing in Catarina’s mind at one point, which I thought was a fun addition.
Unfortunately for any fans of Maria and Catarina as a pair, Maria only has one or two stories that give her enough page time with Catarina. Storywise, it does make sense since Maria met Catarina later in life at the magic academy. Meanwhile, Mary and Sophia both have known Catarina since childhood and grew up together. However, I still wish there were at least one or two more stories involving Maria and Catarina relationship as the main focus, especially since Maria was supposed to be the heroine of the otome game Catarina is now living in, Fortune Lover, while Catarina was supposed to be the game’s main villain.
I also think that though this collection has some very cute bonding moments between the ladies, I wish there were a few opportunities for kiss scenes—especially since this collection was marketed as a yuri anthology. If there are future collections released (maybe a “Girls Patch 2”), I hope the writers take more opportunities to do so.
Overall, I’m rating this book 3.5 out of 5 stars!
I recommend this anthology for fans of “My Next Life As A Villainess,” particularly those who adore the ladies with Catarina. However, it’s not required reading for knowing anything about the main story in the series, and those who want extra Maria and Catarina content might be disappointed by the lack of stories about them.
