I’m back with another book review and this time I’m reviewing “The Devil Is A Part-Timer! Volume 19” by Satoshi Wagahara! It’s been a while since I reviewed another book in the “Devil Is A Part-Timer” series, but I’m glad to pick up the nineteenth volume and read it. Here’s a quick summary so we know what it’s about:
“DO YOU WANT FRIES WITH YOUR HELLFIRE?
After making the difficult decision to quit MgRonald, Chiho’s been spending all her time prepping for the upcoming college entrance exams—until a call from Suzuno interrupts her studies with news that she’s been asked to join one of the most powerful organizations in Ente Isla. The worst part? This new position comes with the responsibility of leading a holy army against Ashiya and the Devil King’s forces!”
Character Development: 4 out of 5 stars
I enjoyed reading more of Maou and Chiho’s individual development in this book. Chiho’s struggles with figuring out what she wants in a relationship with Maou and vice versa was great to read. Another point I enjoyed was Maou’s own struggles with his own self-esteem and confidence. Considering that he’s basically left behind in Japan while the others mainly deal with the politics and struggles of Ente Isla at the moment, as well as his career currently having struggles, I understand that he’s struggling with himself internally.
I was surprised that Suzuno admitted that she also was falling for Maou. It felt sudden to me at first when reading, but then I realized that the development had been slowly building. It just took a lot longer for Suzuno to do so compared to Chiho and Emilia (partially because Suzuno only started showing up in the series a little later than those two and also because Suzuno technically used to be enemies with Maou as well early on).
I also enjoyed reading Suzuno and Chiho’s heart-to-heart with each other late in the book. It was good for both of them to talk about where they were in their life situations right now, as well as the things they’ve learned about themselves and the world around them.
Plot Development: 3 out of 5 stars
I think the pacing of this book could be a bit tighter. Not as much happened in the main story as I hoped it would, but I did enjoy reading plotlines such as Acieth getting sick and the others trying to take care of her, while also trying to figure out what they’re going to do after their upcoming grand battles in the finale are over.
Additionally, this book ended on a cliffhanger, much like the last one. In the end, the characters discussed an upcoming conference that could change how Ente Isla works, and personally affect the main cast. I hope that the next book touches more on this conference and what will happen, which I think is what the main story is aiming for.
Worldbuilding Development: 3.5 out of 5 stars
I thought that the worldbuilding was good overall. There wasn’t much that it added in general other than the large upcoming conference. Additionally, Suzuno also got elected to be another Archbishop of the church, which actually would hurt the main protagonist’s plans for various reasons.
Overall, I’m rating this book 3.5 out of 5 stars!
This was mostly a filler when it came to plot, mainly to bring in more character development. However, it made sense considering that the series is ending in the next two books. I look forward to reading the last two books in the series and I hope they bring a satisfying finale!
