As you all know, I write and read a lot of fanfiction. Just last I did last year and the year before, here are my fanfiction recommendations of this year, 2019! I hope that all of you enjoy reading at least one of the fics from this list, just as much as I enjoyed reading them.
I got hugely into Critical Role this year (Campaign 2 in particular), and also fell in love with the Widomauk ship, which is the ship name for the characters Caleb Widogast and Mollymauk Tealeaf. “Polaris” is a more Modern AU fic of these two meeting by chance, and they both slowly, and deeply, fall in love through the course of this story. This fic does a wonderful job of writing everyone in character in this AU, and though there’s inner conflict that does abound in this fic for reasons I won’t spoil here, I guarantee this fic has a happy ending. Warning: There *is* NSFW (not-safe-for-work) content involved in a couple of the chapters, so be careful where you’re reading this in public.
I must be honest…This could be the only Widomauk fic you’ll ever need to read, because it is fantastic in how it captures everyone’s characters. This one is more safe-for-work than “Polaris,” but it does have the topic of sex being the prime point of conversation, so tread carefully if you’re reading it in public. Otherwise, this is a hilarious read, and if you like the Widomauk ship, you definitely need to read this one.
As one can guess, this is a Critical Role fic based a bit on the Studio Ghibli film “Howl’s Moving Castle,” with Mollymauk Tealeaf as the wizard and Caleb Widogast as our protagonist. I really like how well the author made all the movie roles fit with each of the Critical Role characters in this and even add to their development.
Shifting away from Critical Role and towards a fandom I’ve written numerous fanfics for, The Last Story, this fic features Calista Arganan and General Asthar. It takes place prior to the events of the game, just before Calista *spoiler alert* sneaks out of the castle one last time, just before she meets Zael *spoiler alert ended*. Both Calista and Asthar are wonderfully in character here, and their dialogue and inner thoughts fit perfectly with the tone of the game and how their mindsets worked at the beginning of the game. It’s a short fic, but definitely one that’s intriguing to read.
This is another The Last Story fanfic featuring Sir Therius and General Asthar. This takes place during the events of the game (and I’m not saying exactly when because that’s another major spoiler in the game), and Therius has…well, jealousy issues. The writer has Therius paired with Asthar in this fic, which is a bit unconventional, but they execute this pairing quite well. Their dialogue and interactions with each other fit with the characterization they have in the game’s canon, and though also short, definitely worth reading.
This is a “Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia” Modern AU fanfic starring Zeke and Tatiana, where they’re both already dating, deeply in love with each other, and…Tatiana is both broke and trying to figure out the perfect Christmas present for Zeke. Chaos ensues. It’s definitely a funny fic to read, but what I really love about this fic is how it incorporates all the characters into an established Modern AU so well while keeping them true to their canon personalities. Python and Forsyth are also an established pairing in this fic, and both are also fun to read as well.
This is an “Escape The Night” fanfic, but it’s a Highschool AU. Usually I don’t read Highschool AU fanfics, but this one had me intrigued. Not only do we have starring characters from Season 3 of Escape The Night involved in here, but it turns from a detention-situation to all these highschool!versions of the characters trying to survive the villains who broke into the school in the first place. It’s really fun to read, and kept me on my toes the whole time.
This is a “Detective Pikachu” fanfic, which follows the main story with a twist: Tim is the one turned into a Pokémon, instead of his father. Shenanigans ensue, but so does the reconcilatory bond between father and son. Definitely worth a read.
This is a Harry Potter fanfic, where the Potions Professor is…none other than Gordon Ramsay! Shenanigans ensue, but so do the events of the sixth and seventh books of the Harry Potter series, given that this fic takes place during these two books. We have cooking shenanigans, magic-related shenanigans, but we also have more serious issues explored in this fanfic such as political and class issues as well (especially in the latter half of this fic). Though it’s ninety-nine chapters, it is worth reading the whole thing.
Those are the fics I recommend reading this year! What fanfics have all of you read this year? Have you read any in my list? Feel free to comment below!
