Hello, fellow readers and writers! I hope all of you are staying safe and well.
It’s been a pretty crazy year so far, given all that’s happened, and I was wondering: What kind of Book Tag exists out there to commemorate having a crazy year in the making? I’ve participated in Book Tags related to films, a “Beauty and the Beast” Book Tag, and even a “NOPE!” Book Tag where I got to rant about a lot of things I disliked in fiction.
Thankfully, in the midst of my wondering, I found the Mid-Year Freak Out Book Tag! I wasn’t tagged in this Book Tag, but I saw sophsbookworld’s post about it and figured I’d join in the fun of participating! If I’ve reviewed any books mentioned in this tag, all of you have to do is click the links embedded in the titles. Here is the tag and my answers to it:
1. BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2020
2. BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2020
It’s the only sequel I’ve read so far this year, so I have no choice but to give this book the ‘best sequel’ spot. In reality, though, I had mixed feelings about it—feel free to read the review for more details!
3. NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET BUT WANT TO
Ghost Wood Song by Erica Waters.
I’ve never read a book about summoning the dead with music, of all things, but given what I’ve read in the summary on Goodreads about this book, I’m interested in getting a copy of this book and reading it at some point. I love music, and I love the supernatural, so combining both things sounds really fun.
4. MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR
Honestly, I have no idea if I can really answer this question. I know that sounds bad, but given the giant backlog of books I already have (see my reading list-related posts on Tumblr), I haven’t kept track of what new books are coming out this year and so I can’t answer this quetsion. Sorry!
5. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
There was so much that was left to be desired. Romance development could have been better, the plotline in general could have been better…just read the review for more details.
6. BIGGEST SURPRISE
I never expected the author to reach out to me and offer me the chance to review his book in exchange for a free copy, but it happened and I did it! Even better? The book was really good. Check out the review for more details!
7. FAVOURITE NEW AUTHOR
I read “A Cloak of Red” by this author, and I loved it. As far as I understand, she’ll be writing more in this series (“A Cloak of Red” is the first one), and I can’t wait to read more from her.
8. NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH
Jeanne is a very charming person. They’re not afraid to get serious about things (like people trying to steal from their shop) and despite the fear of being stuck in a cafe if I don’t give tips, I’d be interested in trying out their baked goods. (Also, for those wondering: Jeanne is non-binary, hence the they/them pronouns.) It’s hard for me to really tell much of what I like about them here without too many spoilers, so check out the review!
9. NEWEST FAVOURITE CHARACTER
Mutt from ” The Six-Gun Tarot” and “The Shotgun Arcana” by R.S. Belcher.
He’s one of my favourite characters because 1. I love his romance with Maude, 2. I love his bond with Jim, especially in “Six-Gun Tarot,” and 3. I also feel like he’s one of the more fleshed-out characters in this series. He’s one of the best characters, and he also just doesn’t deserve the racist treatment that he gets from the other characters in both books (especially when he does officially get together with Maude in “Shotgun Arcana”).
10. BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY
This might sound odd, but none of the books made me cry. None.
I don’t cry often when reading, so that may just be a reflection on me as a reader in general, but maybe I just haven’t found a decent tear-jerker-esque book yet, this year. If you have any recommendations, let me know in the comments!
11. BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY
Just…this is an adorable manga. I haven’t read the next volume yet, but I hope to get my hands on it and continue this series. I love the characters, the developing romance, and the whole piece was just so adorable that I couldn’t help but squee in happiness when reading. Check out my review for more details!
12. FAVOURITE BOOK TO FILM ADAPTATION
This is one of my favourites. Are there definitely differences between both the book and movie? Yes. Do I find them equally enjoyable regardless of the differences? Yes.
Again, I cannot stress enough how much I enjoyed reading the book. Check out the review!
13. FAVOURITE POST YOU HAVE DONE THIS YEAR
It was a fun way to reflect on my participation in Camp NaNoWriMo this past April, and I’m glad that those that commented on the post found it . Also, if you missed my most recent update post: I will be participating in Camp NaNoWriMo this July as well!
14. MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU’VE BOUGHT THIS YEAR
I haven’t reviewed this book yet, but I have bought it at the time of writing this post and I eagerly anticipate reading it when it gets to me. The cover looked so beautiful with the pink tones and shading, and I also love the summary that I read about the book, about two friends getting married so one of them can get her parents to stop pestering her about marriage. (And, according to the summary, romance ensues!)
Edit as of 10/12/2020: The review is now posted!
15. WHAT BOOK DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR
“Black” from “The Circle” series by Ted Dekker.
This book has been sitting on my shelf for years, and I still haven’t read it. I really should get around to reading it, so that’s my plan once I finish reading a couple other books on my reading list!
Those are all my answers for the Mid-Year Freak Out Book Tag!
I hope you liked this tag and I tag smudgedthoughts to try this one out, as well as anyone else interested in trying this Book tag!
